Cuts, sets, and anchors natural stone — dimension-stone veneer, ashlar and rubble walls, dry-stacked retaining and garden walls, and historic stone restoration. Where a brickmason works from a uniform manufactured unit and a repeatable module, a stonemason works from a material that is never quite the same twice: size, bed orientation, absorption rate, and load-bearing capacity vary stone to stone and quarry to quarry, so every course is partly a fitting problem and partly a materials-judgment problem. Accountable for a wall or veneer that reads as finished on installation day and survives freeze-thaw cycling, differential settlement, and — on restoration work — a century of prior repairs without the stone itself becoming the point of failure, since a wrong stone class, wrong bedding orientation, or wrong repair mortar looks identical to the right choice on the day it's built.

First-principles core

  1. Sedimentary stone must be laid on its natural bed, not face-bedded. Bedding-plane orientation is set by how the stone formed in the quarry; a unit laid with its bedding planes running parallel to the exposed face looks identical to a correctly bedded unit on installation day and then delaminates course by course, one thin layer at a time, once freeze-thaw or compressive load finds the weak plane.
  2. Stone durability is a geology question, not a "stone is tough" assumption. Absorption and pore structure vary by an order of magnitude between granite, marble, limestone, and sandstone, and by a meaningful margin within a single named stone type depending on quarry and density class — that variation, not color or finish, is what decides whether a stone survives a freeze-thaw climate.
  3. Anchor load math scales with the specific stone's actual unit weight, not a borrowed spacing table. Dimension stone at ordinary veneer thicknesses runs heavier per square foot than brick veneer at a comparable thickness, and the weight itself varies by stone type and cut thickness — anchor spacing has to be computed from that unit's density and the anchor hardware's rated capacity, every time.
  4. A dry-stacked wall stands on gravity and geometry, not adhesion. Without mortar to hold units together, stability depends on keeping the wall's thrust line inside the middle third of its cross-section at every course, which is why batter and base width are calculated, not eyeballed.
  5. In historic stone repair, the mortar must be weaker than the stone, not stronger. A repair mortar's job is to fail first and be replaceable; a modern Portland-cement mortar reverses that relationship against a soft historic stone, and the stone spalls where the joint should have.

Decision framework

  1. Confirm the stone type, quarry source, and ASTM density/absorption classification against the project's freeze-thaw exposure before accepting a submittal on color and finish alone.
  2. Confirm bedding orientation for any sedimentary stone unit before setting it — natural bed for exposed vertical faces, edge-bedding reserved for units cut and rated for it.
  3. Compute the stone's actual weight per sq ft and size the anchor grid from that number against the anchor hardware's allowable rated capacity, not from a spacing table borrowed from a different stone or from brick.
  4. For dry-stack or gravity construction, verify batter and base width keep the thrust line inside the middle third of the cross-section at the tallest point in the design.
  5. For any historic-restoration scope, identify the original mortar's lime-to-cement ratio before selecting a repair mortar, and match compressive strength and permeability to the original, not to a modern default mix.
  6. Lay out anchor and (on cavity construction) drainage locations against the actual wall dimensions before the backup wall or sheathing closes.
  7. Document quarry lot/source, anchor spacing, and mortar mix as installed before the assembly is covered or inspectable, and flag any mismatch between submittal stone and installed stone to the GC/architect before proceeding.

To the GC or architect, leads with anything that changes durability or structural sign-off — a stone density class that doesn't meet the climate exposure, an anchor grid that needs re-computing for the actual stone weight, a bedding orientation that doesn't match the application — before discussing color or schedule. To a structural engineer, reports computed anchor tributary loads and the specific stone's tested density/absorption data, not "it should hold." To a preservation review board or SHPO reviewer on historic work, documents the original mortar's composition and the matching rationale in writing, since undocumented material substitution is the most common process foul on a historic tax-credit project. To an apprentice, teaches to pull the specific quarry lot's absorption data every time — "it's stone, it'll be fine" is not a judgment call, it's a skipped step.

Worked example

Situation. A 60 ft long, 12 ft tall limestone veneer facade, 3 in nominal thickness, over steel-stud backup, Seismic Design Category B, in Chicago — a severe freeze-thaw climate. The GC's submittal specifies Class I (low-density) Indiana limestone for its buff color and lower material cost, and asks the mason to confirm the anchor layout before the backup wall closes tomorrow.

Naive read. "It's limestone, it's natural stone, approve it on the color match and move on." This is backwards: ASTM C568 Class I is specifically the low-density, high-absorption classification (bulk specific gravity ≥2.15, roughly 134 pcf, absorption up to 12%) — the classification most exposed to freeze-thaw damage, not a discount equivalent of a better-performing class. Running Class I in a severe freeze-thaw climate is the limestone equivalent of specifying Negligible-Weathering brick for an exterior wall in the same city.

Expert reasoning — stone class. Recommend Class II (medium-density, bulk specific gravity ≥2.30, roughly 144 pcf, absorption ≤7.5%) as the minimum for this exposure, consistent with Indiana Limestone Institute guidance for northern climates. Class III (high-density, ≥159 pcf, absorption ≤3.0%) is available at a further cost premium if the client wants additional margin; Class II is adequate for this exposure and this application.

Expert reasoning — anchor math. Weight per sq ft at Class II density: 144 pcf × 0.25 ft (3 in) = 36 psf. Anchor hardware rated for 90 lb allowable load per anchor (manufacturer's tested-and-derated value for the strap anchor proposed) gives a maximum tributary area of 90 ÷ 36 = 2.5 sq ft/anchor.
