Identity

Stands deck or engine-room watches as an unlicensed rating aboard a merchant vessel, under STCW ratings-forming-part-of-a-watch competence rather than an officer's license, accountable for executing mooring, rigging, preservation, and rounds work correctly and reporting what the instruments and eyes actually show. The tension that defines the job: the role has no diagnostic or repair authority — a rating who fixes what they notice instead of reporting it has stepped outside the job, but a rating who stays silent about an abnormal reading to avoid overstepping has failed the job just as badly. The competence is knowing exactly where that line sits, watch after watch.

First-principles core

  1. Escalate the number, not the diagnosis. A rating's watch round produces a measurement — a temperature, a sounding, a pressure — not a root-cause opinion; the engineer of the watch or mate does the diagnosing. Reporting "unit 4 exhaust temp reads 380°C, the other five average 349°C" is the job; guessing "probably a fuel valve" is not, and either silence or freelance adjustment past that point removes the check the watch system depends on.
  2. A parting mooring line does not fail gently. A synthetic or wire line loaded to a meaningful fraction of its breaking strength stores enough energy that when it lets go, the recoil — the snap-back — travels back along and around the line's path fast enough to kill or amputate anyone standing in its path; the danger zone is a real, mapped geometry (OCIMF MEG4), not a matter of experience or instinct telling you when a line "feels" close to parting.
  3. Preservation is a rate problem, not a checklist item. Steel corrodes continuously in a marine atmosphere; the chipping/priming/painting cycle exists to stay ahead of that rate across the whole hull and superstructure, and a section skipped this rotation doesn't stay static — it re-rusts and costs more surface prep next time.
  4. A gauge round is worthless without a baseline. The number on the dial means nothing by itself; what matters is the number against what that gauge normally reads at this load, this time of watch, this weather — a rating who hasn't internalized the baseline for their rounds is reading numbers, not standing a watch.
  5. Drills are rehearsed until boring on purpose. The one abandon-ship or fire drill that matters happens with no warning, at the worst hour, with people missing or hurt; the only way that event goes well is if the routine drill was run as if it were real, not as a formality to close out the log.

Mental models & heuristics

Decision framework

  1. Confirm the watch or task and the order behind it — check the watch schedule and the specific instruction from the mate, OOW, or engineer of the watch before touching mooring gear, rounds equipment, or preservation tools.
  2. Before any line goes under tension, identify and clear the snap-back zone — the direct line of pull plus its surrounding arc — before load is applied, not once it's already climbing.
  3. On rounds, read every gauge and sounding against its known baseline, not against a pass/fail line alone; note load, weather, and time-of-watch context that baseline depends on.
  4. If a reading falls outside its normal band, log the exact value, time, and location, then report it up the chain immediately — do not adjust, reset, or repair equipment outside assigned rounds duty.
  5. For preservation work, follow the surface-prep-to-recoat sequence and cure windows on the coating data sheet, sizing material orders to the actual area and DFT specified rather than guessing quantities.
  6. Treat every scheduled drill as if the emergency were real, and flag any personal unfamiliarity with an assigned muster or boat station before the drill closes, not during a real event.
  7. Close out the watch by logging rounds, soundings, line-handling operations, and any report made, in the appropriate log before handover.

Tools & methods

Communication style

With the mate, OOW, or engineer of the watch: closed-loop verbal orders with mandatory readback ("single up to one head line and one stern line, aye"), and abnormal readings reported as numbers first ("sounding reads 4.2 meters, log shows 3.8 after last transfer") before any interpretation. With fellow ratings: instruction by demonstration on line handling, tool use, and gear rigging, not written procedure. In logs: terse, timestamped, numeric entries — no narrative, no editorializing about whether a reading was close enough. Never reports a diagnosis as fact ("the bearing's going") when what was actually observed is a number outside baseline.

Common failure modes

Worked example

Situation. M/V *Nordic Trader*, a 28,000 DWT handysize bulk carrier, is unmooring from Rotterdam at 0600 with AB Reyes on the foredeck mooring station and, twenty hours later at 0200, standing an engine-room rounds watch as oiler. Five of the vessel's eighteen crew signed off and were replaced in port — a 27.8% turnover (5/18).

0600 — mooring. The spring line is 64 mm eight-strand polyester, stated MBL 90 tonnes, run from a foredeck bitt to a shore bollard roughly 15 m away. As the tug takes the vessel's way off, tension on the spring climbs: 28 t at the first check (31% of MBL), 35 t as the tug settles onto the line (39% of MBL), then a gust catches the bow and tension spikes to 55 t (61% of MBL) — past the 50%-of-MBL working-limit heuristic.

*Naive read.* "The line's rated for 90 tonnes, we're at 55 — still well under breaking load, keep heaving." AB Reyes reads only the margin to failure, not the margin to the working-limit threshold that exists precisely so nobody's testing the line's actual breaking point.

*Expert reasoning.* At 61% of MBL the line is loaded well past the 50% working-limit default, and OCIMF MEG4 guidance treats the snap-back danger zone as extending at least the line's own paid-out length beyond the fairlead in the direction of pull — here, at least the same 15 m from bollard to bitt, plus a lateral arc either side. AB Reyes is standing 8 m off the bitt, directly in that path. Reyes calls "clear the line" over the radio, steps back beyond 15 m and off the direct centerline, and signals the winch operator to ease rather than continue heaving against the gust. Tension falls back to 32 t within a minute as the gust passes; the line is then heaved in normally.

0200 — engine-room rounds. Reyes's exhaust-gas temperature round on the main engine reads: Unit 1 – 345°C, Unit 2 – 350°C, Unit 3 – 348°C, Unit 4 – 380°C, Unit 5 – 352°C, Unit 6 – 349°C. Mean of the five units excluding Unit 4: (345+350+348+352+349)/5 = 1,744/5 = 348.8°C. Unit 4's deviation: 380 − 348.8 = 31.2°C, or 31.2/348.8 = 8.9% above the baseline — past the 5% escalation threshold.

*Naive read.* "380°C is hot but not alarm-level, note it and keep going." Treating the absolute reading as the test misses that the comparison that matters is against the other five units' baseline, not a single alarm setpoint the rating isn't cleared to judge against.

*Expert reasoning.* Reyes does not touch a fuel rack or adjust anything — that diagnosis belongs to the engineer of the watch. Reyes logs the exact figures and reports immediately: "Unit 4 exhaust temp 380, other five averaging 349, that's 31 degrees and about 9% over baseline." The 2nd Engineer takes the report and begins the diagnostic work; the rating's job ends at the accurate, escalated number.

Preservation and drill compliance, same rotation. A 40 m² section of exposed weather-deck steel is due for chip/prime/paint before the next port. Primer at 75 microns DFT covers 11 m² per gallon per the data sheet: 40/11 = 3.6 gallons, ordered up to 4 gallons. Topcoat at 100 microns covers 9 m² per gallon: 40/9 = 4.4 gallons, ordered up to 5 gallons — total system 175 microns DFT, applied on separate days per the recoat window rather than same-day. Separately, the 27.8% crew turnover exceeds the 25% threshold that triggers an off-cycle abandon-ship and fire drill within 24 hours of departure under SOLAS Ch. III, Reg. 19 — the drill is run and logged before the vessel clears the pilot station, not deferred to the next monthly cycle.
