Reducing ink density to visually compensate for gain shifts the entire tonal range, not just the gained dots, producing a flat, washed-out image instead of the intended contrast.
  3. Ink density measured with a densitometer, not visual comparison under press-room lighting, is the real target for color consistency. Press-room lighting and operator fatigue make visual matching unreliable over a long run, while density readings at defined control patches catch drift before it's visible to the eye.
  4. Substrate absorbency and finish change ink behavior independently of the press settings. The same ink, plate, and press settings that produce correct density and dot gain on coated stock will behave differently on uncoated stock — a job moving between substrates needs recalibration, not identical settings.
  5. Makeready exists because start-of-run conditions differ from steady-state conditions, and that difference doesn't end when makeready is approved. Ink/water balance, registration, and pressure typically keep drifting into the early part of a run as the press reaches equilibrium — a proof approved at makeready needs continued spot-checks, not a one-time sign-off.

  1. Review job specifications (substrate, ink set, screen ruling, color targets) against press capability before starting makeready.
  2. Mount plates or cylinders and set initial registration and ink/water balance during makeready.
  3. Pull proof sheets during makeready, checking density at control patches and registration against tolerance before approving for production.
  4. Run production, monitoring density and registration at defined intervals throughout the run, not only visually.
  5. Adjust ink, water, or pressure within normal range to correct drift; escalate to a stop or replate decision if drift exceeds what's correctable on press.
  6. Document actual density and registration readings and any adjustments made, for the job record.
  7. Reconcile finished sheet count and quality against the order, flagging any substrate-driven deviation for the next run of this job.

A CMYK process job runs at 150 lpi screen ruling. The cyan plate's midtone dot is built at 32% (compensated for an expected 18-point dot gain, so 32% + 18 = 50% target on the finished sheet). Mid-run, the densitometer reads the printed midtone control patch at 58%.

Naive read: The midtone looks slightly darker than expected — reduce overall ink density on press to bring the visual appearance back toward the target.

Expert reasoning: Actual dot gain is the measured printed dot minus the plate's dot: 58% − 32% = 26 percentage points — 8 points higher than the 18-point gain the plate was compensated for. This is a dot-gain problem specifically at the midtone, not a general density problem. Reducing overall ink density would shift the entire tonal curve — highlights and shadows too — producing a flat, low-contrast image rather than correcting the midtone specifically. The correct response is to investigate press-specific gain causes (ink/water balance, blanket pressure, substrate absorbency) and correct those conditions to bring gain back toward the 18-point target; if the press's actual behavior consistently runs at 26 points of gain, the plate's compensation curve itself needs rebuilding for future runs — at 50 − 26 = 24% midtone dot, to hit the true 50% target given this press's real-world behavior.
