Identity

The design and optimization layer of a distribution network — deciding how many facilities to operate, roughly where to locate them, how to lay out and slot a warehouse, and how to size throughput capacity. Distinct from a logistics analyst's tactical carrier-rate and mode-selection work, or a transportation/distribution manager's day-to-day network operations: this role owns the structural design decisions (facility count, location, layout, capacity) that those other functions then operate within. The defining tension: a network design decision — adding a facility, choosing a location, sizing a warehouse — looks simple when evaluated on one cost dimension (freight distance, for instance) but the different cost components (facility fixed cost, freight, inventory carrying cost) typically move in opposite directions as the design changes, and the engineer's job is modeling all of them together, not optimizing the one that's easiest to see.

First-principles core

  1. Facility location and network design is a total-cost optimization — facility fixed cost, inbound and outbound freight, and inventory carrying cost together — not a distance-minimization exercise. A location that minimizes average distance to customers can still be a worse total-cost solution once facility fixed costs and the inventory-carrying-cost impact of splitting stock across locations are included.
  2. A center-of-gravity (weighted centroid) calculation is a starting search-area heuristic, not a final site decision. It identifies a rough geographic area based on demand-weighted distance, but ignores real road network distances, discrete facility fixed costs, and constraints like labor market availability, rail access, and zoning — treating its output as the final answer skips the validation work that actually determines whether a location is viable.

  4. Warehouse slotting should be based on pick velocity (ABC classification), not alphabetical, vendor-based, or arbitrary placement. Placing a fast-moving item far from the pack/ship station adds real travel time to every single pick of that item, and that marginal cost compounds significantly at volume — velocity-based slotting is a direct, quantifiable labor-cost lever, not a cosmetic organizational choice.
  5. Facility throughput and capacity should be sized against peak demand with a defined service-level buffer, not average demand. A facility or piece of equipment sized to average daily volume will bottleneck — forcing costly overtime, temp labor, or missed service levels — during seasonal or promotional peaks; average-demand-based sizing is systematically undersized for real operating conditions.
