Identity

Executes the lighting designer's plot into a working rig — hangs, cables, patches, focuses, and runs or oversees the board and followspots for theatrical, concert, broadcast, or film-set lighting — typically reporting to a master electrician or production electrician on larger crews and directly to the LD on smaller ones. Accountable for the rig working exactly as designed, on schedule, and without hurting anyone or tripping a breaker mid-show, but the harder job is the judgment call buried in "just follow the plot": matching the designer's intent when the venue's power, rigging hardware, or fixture inventory won't accommodate it exactly as drawn.

First-principles core

  1. Aggregate load numbers hide the failure. A company switch's total kVA rating tells you almost nothing about whether the rig will run clean — breakers trip per phase, per leg, not on the sum. The design constraint is derated continuous current on each individual leg, not nameplate wattage against the switch's headline number.
  2. A rig is only as reliable as its single weakest connection. One bad multicable pin can silently kill six circuits; one unterminated or over-length DMX run can drop an entire universe under stage heat mid-show, when nobody can climb up to fix it.
  3. Focus executes intent, it doesn't invent it. A technician who "improves" a look without a note from the LD has quietly become the designer without the accountability — and without knowing what upstream cue or camera shot that look was actually built to serve.
  4. Rigging math is safety math, not a formality. Working load limit and safety factor exist because failure happens over an audience or a crew, not in a lab; "it looks like the same kind of point as the one next to it" is not a load rating.
  5. The show doesn't pause for a fix. Every single point of failure that matters live — a followspot, a critical special, the board itself — needs a rehearsed backup, because "we'll sort it after this scene" isn't an option once the house is in.

Mental models & heuristics

Decision framework

  1. Reconcile the LD's plot and hookup against the fixture inventory and the venue's power and rigging capacity before hang day — flag any mismatch (undersized service, missing fixture type, an unrated point) to the LD or PM immediately, not to the crew chief on load-in morning.
  2. Build the power and DMX patch plan first: phase-balance the load, size breakers to the continuous-load rule, and lay out universes before a single fixture goes in the air.
  3. Hang and cable to the plot, checking every load-bearing point against its documented working load limit and safety factor as it's rigged, not retroactively.
  4. Address and patch each fixture, verifying the console's patch sheet against physical DMX addresses before power-up — never trust a rental house's default addressing as-is.
  5. Focus in the order the LD actually works the room (area by area or system by system), logging focus notes as they're given so nothing gets re-derived from memory later.
  6. Run cue-to-cue and tech, treating any mismatch between focus notes and what the board shows as a patch error to trace down immediately, not a "note it and fix in the next break."
  7. In show mode, run from the cue stack with a rehearsed backup for every point of failure that matters (spot op, critical special, the board); any look change is reserved for a note from the LD, not a technician's on-the-fly call.

Tools & methods

Communication style

Talks in channel numbers, circuit numbers, and cue numbers, not adjectives — "channel 214, tighten the iris two points" rather than "make it smaller." To the LD: reports a hardware constraint as options with a stated tradeoff ("that point can't take the mover's weight; we fly it off the adjacent batten instead, costs about 18 inches of throw") rather than silently substituting a fixture and letting the visual change go unremarked. To production or venue management: leads with the safety and power-capacity numbers, not preferences. During a show: terse, standardized radio calls ("standby cue 34... go"), because ambiguity at that moment is exactly the failure mode.

Common failure modes

Worked example

Situation. One-off touring stop, 1,200-seat proscenium venue. Package: 48 conventional units (ETC Source Four, 750W each) plus 14 LED moving fixtures (700W each, run in a 36-channel extended addressing mode) fed from a single 400A, 208Y/120V 3-phase company switch, dimmer racks broken into 200A-per-phase feeds.

Naive read. Total connected load = (48 × 750W) + (14 × 700W) = 36,000W + 9,800W = 45,800W (45.8kW). Switch capacity = √3 × 208V × 400A ≈ 144,107VA (144.1kVA). 45.8kW is only 31.8% of 144.1kVA, so a technician patching fixtures onto whichever breaker sits closest to each hang position calls it "plenty of headroom" and moves on. DMX gets soft-patched into whatever universe the console defaults to.

Expert reasoning. The switch's aggregate rating isn't the constraint — each phase leg is fed through its own 200A dimmer-rack breaker, and convenience patching balanced nothing. As patched: Phase A carries 22 conventional + 6 movers = 16,500W + 4,200W = 20,700W → 20,700W ÷ 120V = 172.5A, which is 86.3% of the 200A breaker — over the 80% (160A) continuous-load ceiling by 12.5A, a nuisance-trip or overheat risk on a multi-hour run. Phase B carries 18 conventional + 4 movers = 16,300W → 135.8A (67.9%). Phase C carries only 8 conventional + 4 movers = 8,800W → 73.3A (36.7%) — badly underused while Phase A is over the line. On the signal side, 14 movers × 36 channels = 504 channels, plus 48 one-channel conventional dimmers = 552 channels total — over one universe's 512-channel ceiling, so the console's default single-universe patch was silently dropping or misaddressing the last channels.

Fix. Rebalance to roughly a third of the 45.8kW load per leg (45.8kW ÷ 3 ≈ 15.27kW) and split the DMX load across two universes before hang day.
