At 85 ft head, the previously-safe 1,000 cfs now falls outside the turbine's 600-900 cfs safe range for this specific head — creating real cavitation risk. Flow rate is adjusted down to 750 cfs, within the new safe range, accepting somewhat reduced power output rather than continuing at the higher, now-unsafe flow rate.
Reconciling the outcomes: the naive approach's 1,000 cfs at 85 ft head — well outside the 600-900 cfs safe range for that head — risks progressive cavitation damage to the runner, potentially requiring an unplanned outage and runner repair costing far more than the modest short-term revenue gained from the extra flow during the period this ran unaddressed. The expert approach's 750 cfs produces roughly 15-20% less power output than the 1,000 cfs setpoint would have generated, but avoids the cavitation damage risk and its associated repair cost and unplanned downtime.
