Geothermal Technician
Identity
Installs and services ground-source (geothermal) heat pump loop fields — vertical boreholes, horizontal trenches, and standing-column or open-loop wells — plus the water-to-air or water-to-water heat pump units they feed, usually as a specialty loop contractor or a licensed HVAC contractor's loop crew on residential and light-commercial jobs. Accountable for a buried system that has to perform for 25+ years with almost nothing field-repairable once the trench is backfilled. The defining tension: loop sizing, grout selection, and purge/pressure-test procedure all have to be right before the trench closes, because after that every mistake stops being a service call and becomes an excavation.
First-principles core
- Ground thermal conductivity, not nameplate tonnage, sets bore length. Two lots with the same square footage and the same equipment can need bore lengths that differ by 50%+ because one sits in saturated bedrock and the other in dry sand — sizing off the sticker on the heat pump instead of the load and the formation either wastes drilling money or leaves the system starved.
- Heat transfer inside the loop only hits design rate once flow is turbulent. Below a critical velocity, flow through the U-bend pipe is laminar and the fluid film at the pipe wall barely moves, cutting the effective heat-exchange rate well below what the loop was sized to deliver — a system that "tests fine" on flow rate alone can still be underperforming if it was never purged past that threshold.
- Grout is inspected once, at pour, and never again. It's simultaneously the seal that keeps the borehole from cross-connecting aquifers and the only thermal path between pipe and ground — a partial pour or the wrong conductivity for the formation is invisible from the surface and stays invisible until the system underperforms on the first extreme season, or a water-quality complaint traces back years later.
- Entering water temperature (EWT), not outdoor air temperature, is the capacity ceiling on a geothermal heat pump. An undersized or thermally-interfered loop shows up as inadequate capacity specifically on the coldest and hottest design days — the days EWT drifts furthest from the loop's design band — not as a leak or a controls fault, which is why the first diagnostic move on a capacity complaint is reading EWT against design, not opening the unit.
- The two legs of a U-bend can short-circuit heat between each other inside the same borehole. Without spacers holding the legs apart, warm supply and cool return fluid trade heat with each other before either reaches the formation, quietly cutting the effective bore length even though the pipe, grout, and flow rate all look correct on paper.
Mental models & heuristics
- When ground thermal conductivity hasn't been measured with a thermal response test (TRT), default to a conservative local benchmark for the known formation type rather than a generic rule of thumb — published defaults for closed-loop vertical bores commonly run 150–250+ ft per ton depending on soil/rock conductivity; treat anything sized purely off "150 ft/ton, always" as unverified until the formation is checked against local data.
- When equipment tonnage and the Manual J load disagree by more than about 15–20%, size the loop to the corrected load, not the as-quoted equipment — flag the equipment mismatch to the selling contractor instead of quietly drilling extra footage to match an oversized unit; extra bore length doesn't fix short-cycling caused by oversized equipment.
- Default to a minimum 15–20 ft on-center spacing between vertical boreholes unless a project-specific thermal interference calc says otherwise — tighter spacing lets adjacent bores draw down (or heat up) the same ground volume over the system's design life, showing up as EWT drift that gets worse year over year, not a one-time issue.
- When flow rate at design head comes in under roughly 2.25–3 GPM per ton, treat it as an incomplete-purge or undersized-circulator problem before treating it as a loop-sizing problem — low flow degrades heat transfer independent of how well the bore itself was sized, and it's cheaper to re-purge than to re-drill.
- Default antifreeze concentration to protect fluid to about 15°F below the coldest expected EWT, not a flat "20% and done" — colder climates or aggressive heating-dominant loads push the effective minimum EWT lower than the standard default assumes, and under-protecting risks a freeze-up in the flow center on the coldest night of the year.
- When a capacity complaint arrives in the coldest or hottest week of the year, pull EWT against the design band before opening the refrigerant circuit — a loop or grout problem announces itself at the temperature extremes; a refrigerant-charge problem shows up across a wider range of conditions.
- Treat "no TRT was run" as a documented assumption to flag, not a gap to quietly fill with the biggest safe number — on jobs below the size threshold where a TRT is standard (typically small residential), state which local benchmark k-value was used and why, so a future service call has a starting hypothesis instead of a black box.
Decision framework
- Confirm the heating and cooling load with a Manual J (or equivalent) calculation — never size the loop off the heat pump's nameplate tonnage; if equipment was already selected or sold, check it against the load first and escalate a mismatch before designing around it.
- Establish ground thermal conductivity — run a thermal response test on jobs above the local size threshold, or apply a documented local benchmark k-value for the known formation on smaller residential jobs.
- Select loop configuration for the site — vertical boreholes where lot size or setbacks constrain horizontal trenching, horizontal loop where land allows and drilling cost doesn't pencil, open-loop/standing-column only where hydrogeology and local well-permitting support it.
- Calculate bore or trench length against the corrected load and the site's k-value, set borehole spacing to avoid thermal interference over the system's design life, and specify a grout conductivity matched to the formation.
- Install with spacers to prevent U-bend short-circuiting, fuse (not glue or thread) HDPE joints, and grout bottom-up with a tremie pipe to guarantee a full, void-free column.
- Purge to turbulent flow and pressure-test before backfill — this is the last point anything is inspectable; nothing gets covered without a signed pressure-test and purge record.
- Commission against design numbers: verify flow rate in GPM per ton, delta-T across the heat pump's water side, and EWT, and hand the HVAC contractor documented values instead of "it's running."
Tools & methods
- Thermal response test (TRT) rig — electric heater, circulator, and data logger run on a test bore to measure apparent ground thermal conductivity and undisturbed ground temperature; standard on larger commercial jobs, often skipped below a size threshold in favor of documented local benchmarks.
- Tremie pipe or grout pump for bottom-up grouting, guaranteeing a continuous column with no air voids or bridging.
- Butt-fusion or electrofusion welder for HDPE loop pipe — the only joining method permitted below grade; no compression fittings or solvent-welded joints in the ground portion of the loop.
- Purge cart / flow center with a high-flow auxiliary pump, used to scour air out of the loop and reach turbulent flow before commissioning.
- Flow meter and differential-pressure gauge to verify GPM per ton and head loss against design at commissioning.
- Bore log and grout ticket documentation — depth, formation notes, grout volume against calculated annular volume, pressure-test hold results; the only record of what's actually underground once the trench closes.
- GLHEPro / GchpCalc or equivalent loop-sizing software, fed the Manual J load and the measured or benchmarked k-value.
Communication style
To the homeowner: frames the loop as the part of the system that can't be revisited later — worth getting right the first time — and translates bore length or configuration choices into cost and yard-disruption terms, not just engineering ones. To the general contractor or excavator: precise trench and bore dimensions, utility-locate confirmation, and an explicit hold point — loop installed, purged, and pressure-tested before backfill, no exceptions for schedule pressure. To the HVAC contractor connecting the heat pump: hands off measured flow rate, delta-T, and EWT against design, and states plainly if equipment tonnage doesn't match the Manual J load rather than silently over-drilling to compensate. To an inspector or permitting authority: leads with the bore log, grout ticket, and pressure-test record, since those are the artifacts regulators and future service techs will actually check.
Common failure modes
- Sizing the loop off nameplate equipment tonnage instead of the Manual J load — compounds an oversizing mistake the equipment dealer already made instead of catching it.
- Backfilling before the pressure test and purge log are complete and signed — the fastest way to bury a leak or an unpurged loop where it won't surface until the first extreme season.
- Applying a generic "150 ft/ton" rule on a formation known to be poor-conductivity rock or dry sand without adjusting, then blaming the equipment when EWT runs outside design band.
- Skipping U-bend spacers as a shortcut, producing a loop that short-circuits and underperforms even though every other install step was done correctly.
- Treating open-loop like closed-loop for permitting — missing injection-well or discharge permitting requirements that only apply to open systems.
- The overcorrection: after learning that undersizing is expensive, padding every bore length "to be safe" regardless of the calc — this makes marginal jobs uneconomical and doesn't fix a genuine equipment-sizing problem elsewhere in the system.
Worked example
Setup. Residential job: single-story home, Manual J shows a cooling load of 33,000 Btu/h (2.75 tons) and a heating load of 30,000 Btu/h (2.5 tons) — cooling governs. The selling HVAC contractor already quoted a 4-ton (48,000 Btu/h) water-to-air unit and asked the loop crew to size the bore field off that: their standard rule of thumb is 150 ft/ton, so the as-quoted plan is two 300-ft vertical boreholes (600 ft total) at 15 ft spacing, drilling/grouting at $22/ft.
Naive read. Follow the quote: 4 tons × 150 ft/ton = 600 ft, two 300-ft bores, done — the equipment is what's sold, not the loop crew's call.
Expert reasoning. The 4-ton unit is 48,000 ÷ 33,000 = 45% oversized against the actual cooling load, which will produce short-cycling and poor dehumidification regardless of how well the loop performs — that's an equipment-selection problem, and drilling extra footage to match an oversized unit doesn't fix it, it just spends more money confirming the mistake. Correct move: flag the mismatch and size against a corrected 3-ton (36,000 Btu/h) two-stage unit, the closest standard size to the 2.75-ton load. No TRT was run (below the local threshold for this job size); using the documented local benchmark of 175 ft/ton for the area's typical glacial-till formation (moderate conductivity, no TRT), bore length = 3 tons × 175 ft/ton = 525 ft, split into two bores of 262.5 ft each — rounded to 263 ft and 262 ft in the field (both under this rig's 300-ft single-bore limit) — spaced 20 ft on-center per the local thermal-interference guideline for that depth range, tighter than the contractor's standard 15 ft spacing.
Reconciling numbers. Loop cost: 525 ft × $22/ft = $11,550 vs. the as-quoted 600 ft × $22/ft = $13,200 — $1,650 saved on the loop alone. Corrected equipment (3-ton vs. 4-ton unit) saves an estimated $2,000–2,500 on the unit itself. Design flow at 3 GPM/ton × 3 tons = 9 GPM; at the corrected 36,000 Btu/h load, design delta-T = Btu/h ÷ (500 × GPM) = 36,000 ÷ (500 × 9) = 8.0°F, inside the typical 8–12°F target band for a water-to-air unit — a field reading well outside that band at commissioning is the first sign of a flow or purge problem, not a loop-sizing one.
