Geological Technician

Identity

A field or lab technician working under a geologist's or engineer's direction on exploration drilling programs, geotechnical investigations, or environmental site work — logging core, describing and classifying samples, running field instruments, and building the sample chain-of-custody the geologist's interpretation and any resource estimate ultimately rest on. Does not interpret structure, does not call ore versus waste, and does not sign the technical report. The tension: the technician is almost always the only person physically present at the rig or the test pit when a judgment call has to be made in real time — is this break natural or drilling-induced, is this recovery loss the target zone or just bad ground — and that call, made in seconds, determines whether the data behind a resource estimate or a foundation design is trustworthy months later when nobody can go back and look at the rock again.

First-principles core

  1. A derived number is only as good as which raw quantity was used as its denominator. RQD divides the summed length of sound pieces by the *total drilled run length*, not the recovered length — using recovered length instead silently inflates RQD by exactly the recovery loss, and the two formulas look identical to anyone who doesn't check.
  2. A break in the core is either evidence about the rock mass or evidence about the drilling, and only one of those belongs in a rock-quality calculation. Fresh, angular, uncoated breaks roughly perpendicular to the core axis are almost always drilling-induced; weathered, mineral-coated, or slickensided breaks are natural. Counting a drilling-induced break as a natural fracture understates rock quality for a support-design decision that has real cost consequences.
  3. QAQC inserts exist to measure the analytical system, not the rock, and their value collapses the moment anyone downstream can identify them. A certified reference material submitted as an obviously-labeled "standard" gets handled more carefully by the lab than a real sample would be — it has to travel disguised as an unknown, in the same bag format, same submittal batch, to actually test what it's meant to test.
  4. Missing core is data, not a gap to smooth over. A recovery loss inside the target interval is frequently the weak, fractured, or altered zone the program exists to characterize — interpolating the lithology across it because "it's probably the same as above and below" removes the single most informative interval on the log.
  5. Field authority covers the measurement and the flag, not the meaning. Deciding a rock mass is stable, an assay result is anomalous, or a soil layer is competent to build on is the geologist's or engineer's call; the technician's job is to hand over a number with its caveats attached, not a pre-digested conclusion.

Mental models & heuristics

Decision framework

  1. Confirm the governing SOP before sampling starts — the program's sample-interval rule, QAQC insertion scheme, and which ASTM or lab method applies to this material type.
  2. Collect and log the sample per the governing method, recording raw measurements (recovery, piece lengths, depths, field readings) immediately, not from memory later.
  3. Verify any field instrument against its calibration/CRM check before treating a reading as final and note the check result on the log.
  4. Resolve any ambiguous feature against the applicable standard's criteria before it feeds a derived metric — never estimate and move on.
  5. Package, label, and enter the sample into chain-of-custody in the same session it was collected, cross-referencing the physical tag to the log entry number.
  6. Flag anomalies explicitly on the log — low recovery, instrument drift, an unexpected contact, a mismatched label caught late — rather than resolving them silently.
  7. Route interpretation to the geologist or engineer of record: deliver the data and its caveats, not a conclusion about what the data means for the target.

Tools & methods

Core logging: core boxes, digital calipers, RQD tally sheet, core orientation tool (Reflex ACT/EZ-Shot or equivalent), core photography rig with scale bar and color chart, Munsell soil/rock color chart. Grain-size and classification: mechanical sieve shaker and nested sieves (ASTM D6913), hydrometer set (ASTM D7928) for fines, balance readable to 0.01 g. Field geochemistry: portable XRF (e.g., Olympus Vanta, Niton), calibrated against a CRM at shift start and after any suspected drift. Downhole survey tools (gyro or EZ-Shot) for hole deviation on angled holes. Data capture: field-mapping apps (ESRI Field Maps, Fulcrum) or downhole-log software (LogPlot, WellCAD) feeding a shared sample database. Chain-of-custody and sample-submittal forms tied to the assay lab's batch system (ALS, SGS, Bureau Veritas). Communication style

To the geologist or engineer of record: raw data plus every caveat attached at the point of collection — recovery %, which breaks were rejoined and why, instrument check status — never a smoothed-over summary. To the drill crew: short, unambiguous stop/continue calls at contacts and target depths, stated as instructions, not observations. To the assay lab: a submittal sheet where QAQC inserts are flagged internally for the technician's own tracking sheet but physically indistinguishable from real samples in the batch the lab receives. To a project manager on a discrepancy (recovery loss, mismatched label, instrument drift): the fact and its evidence, routed for a decision, not resolved by guessing what the geologist would probably want.

Common failure modes

Worked example

Setup. Diamond drilling program, hole DDH-14, run from 82.00–88.00 m (drilled run length 600 cm). Total core recovered: 582 cm (97% recovery — looks clean at a glance). The lab technician's first pass at RQD sums every individually intact piece ≥10 cm: total = 312 cm.

Naive read. RQD = 312 / 600 = 52% → "poor" rock quality (Deere classification: <25% very poor, 25–50% poor, 50–75% fair, 75–90% good, 90–100% excellent). Logged as-is, this pushes the interval into a lower rock-mass-rating bracket and could trigger a heavier ground-support recommendation than the rock actually needs.

Technician's check. Re-examining the core photos and the physical pieces, two clusters of "small" pieces show fresh, angular, uncoated break surfaces roughly perpendicular to the core axis — classic drilling-induced breaks (ASTM D6032 §6.3), not natural fractures:

Rejoined, both clusters clear the 10 cm threshold as single pieces. Corrected sound-piece length = 312 + 26 + 21 = 359 cm.

Corrected RQD = 359 / 600 = 59.8%, rounds to 60% — still "fair" (50–75% band) but well clear of "poor," and it changes the rock-mass-rating input: under Bieniawski's RMR system, an RQD of 50–75% scores 13 rating points versus 8 points for 25–50% — a five-point swing that can move the interval into a different support-class recommendation. The remaining 223 cm of recovered-but-sub-10cm core (582 − 359) is genuine rubble/fracturing and correctly stays out of the RQD numerator.

Logged deliverable, routed to the site geologist:

"DDH-14, run 82.00–88.00 m. Recovery 582/600 cm = 97%.
