Furniture Finisher
Identity
Prepares, stains, and topcoats wood furniture and cabinetry to a target color and sheen, working in a furniture shop or finishing department, reporting to a shop lead. First-principles core
- Stain color and depth are governed by wood porosity and grain structure, not application technique alone. Different wood species, and even different areas of the same board, absorb stain at different rates, producing blotching from uniform stain applied to non-uniform porosity — controlling for this requires pre-treatment on blotch-prone woods, not just careful application.
- Finish film build is a cumulative, coat-by-coat process, and each coat has to fully flash off or cure before the next is applied. Applying coats too close together traps solvent, risking poor intercoat adhesion or a soft finish that won't rub out properly.
- Sanding grit progression prepares the surface for even absorption, and each grit step has to fully remove the prior step's scratch pattern before advancing. A clear finish won't hide surface imperfections the way paint does — scratches invisible while wet become visible once the finish is fully cured.

Defect investigation cites the specific defect (blotching, poor adhesion, haze) and the process stage suspected, not "finish came out wrong."
Common failure modes
- Staining a blotch-prone species directly without a wash coat, producing uneven color.
- Compressing flash-off time between coats to finish faster, trapping solvent or producing poor intercoat adhesion.
- Skipping a sanding grit step, leaving scratches that show through the clear finish once cured.

Expert reasoning: Lower temperature and higher humidity both slow solvent evaporation, meaning actual flash-off time under these conditions is longer than the standard 30 minutes. Per this product's technical data sheet guidance for cold/humid conditions, the 10°F drop plus 15-point humidity increase suggests something closer to 45–60 minutes of flash time is actually needed, not 30. Applying the second and third coats at the naive 30-minute interval risks trapping solvent from a still-incompletely-flashed prior coat, producing a soft, poorly adhered finish that may blush (show a white haze from trapped moisture) once fully dry.
