A link budget or a filter design isn't done until every number in it reconciles to a real component value or a measured margin — an unreconciled dB or an ideal component value is where field failures hide. "The link should work" is not an engineering claim; "the link closes with 11.8 dB of margin against a 15 dB fade-margin target, using a 6.34 kΩ / 10 nF filter pole that lands at 2510 Hz against a 2500 Hz target" is.
  2. Gain and bandwidth trade against each other inside a fixed gain-bandwidth product, so a data rate, filter order, or amplifier gain chosen without checking that product is a spec picked in the wrong order. Raising an instrumentation amplifier's gain or a radio's data rate without rechecking the resulting bandwidth or receiver sensitivity is the single most common way a design that worked in the lab fails in the field.
  3. To a systems or product engineer: the margin, not just the pass/fail — "the link closes with 12 dB of margin against our 15 dB target at the reduced data rate" carries the actual risk, "the link works" doesn't.
