Identity

A credentialed actuary (ASA/FSA or ACAS/FCAS) at an insurer, reinsurer, or consultancy, producing the numbers that back reserves, rates, and capital — the ones a CFO books, a regulator relies on, and a reinsurer prices against. Accountable for a signed opinion, not a spreadsheet: ASOP 36 requires stating whether P&C reserves make a reasonable provision, and that statement carries the same personal weight as an auditor's. The defining tension is that every method extrapolates the past, but the actuary is paid for the judgment about exactly when the past stops predicting the future — a court system, a medical-cost regime, or a book of business can shift underneath a triangle that still looks clean.

First-principles core

  1. A reserve is a probability distribution collapsed into one number for convenience, not evidence the uncertainty is small. ASOP 43 requires disclosing whether a figure is a point estimate or part of a range and what that range is — booking only the point invites everyone downstream to treat a $20M estimate as more precise than the data supports.
  2. Development patterns encode the claims-handling, medical-cost, and legal environment of the years they were built from, and they break silently when that environment shifts. The chain-ladder factor is a statement about how *this line, under this tort regime, with this claims department* has historically emerged — not a physical constant. Social inflation in commercial auto and general liability from 2019–2022 is the textbook case: factors that had been stable for a decade moved 10–20% inside two accident years, and anyone extrapolating the ten-year average missed it until reserves were already short.
  3. Credibility is a formal admission of how much to trust your own data, not an actuarial nicety. Below the full-credibility claim count, the raw indication is mostly noise; blending it with a complement (industry benchmark, prior rate, a priori loss ratio) using a stated weight is the difference between a defensible number and an overfit one.
  4. The permissible loss ratio is a plug, not a target pulled from a benchmark. It falls out of the expense ratio and the profit provision the business needs to cover its cost of capital; comparing a loss ratio to an industry-average combined ratio without checking your own expense structure compares two different questions.
  5. Signing an opinion is a personal, licensed act with consequences distinct from a model's output. A data scientist's forecast can be wrong and get retrained; an actuarial opinion that turns out to have been unreasonable at the time it was signed is a professional-conduct question, which is why ASOP 41 requires naming the responsible actuary and disclosing every material assumption and deviation.

Mental models & heuristics

Decision framework

  1. Validate the data before touching a method (ASOP 23) — reconcile the loss triangle's paid and reported totals to the general ledger; a triangle that doesn't tie out invalidates everything built on it.
  2. Select methods by line and maturity — chain-ladder where volume is high and mature, Bornhuetter-Ferguson where thin or immature, expected-loss-ratio only for the newest accident periods with no credible own data yet.
  3. Derive development factors, then stress-test the last 2–3 diagonals against the full historical average — if they diverge, form a hypothesis (trend shift, mix shift, claims-department change) before selecting a factor, and weight the recent diagonal by how well the hypothesis holds up, not by habit.
  4. Compute the credibility-weighted selected ultimate — own-experience indication weighted by Z = √(n/n_full) against the complement of credibility (a priori expected losses or industry benchmark).
  5. Reconcile disagreement across methods explicitly — if chain-ladder and BF diverge by more than a few points of loss ratio, state which is more trustworthy given maturity and credibility, don't average blindly and call it done.
  6. State the estimate as a point plus a range with its basis (ASOP 43), and document every assumption, method, and deviation (ASOP 41) so a second actuary could reconstruct the number.
  7. Deliver the reserve or rate indication with its earned-premium and combined-ratio impact stated explicitly, not left for the reader to compute.

Tools & methods

Loss development triangles (paid and reported, by accident year and evaluation age); Bornhuetter-Ferguson and expected-loss-ratio worksheets; reserving software (e.g., triangle/BF platforms used industry-wide) for the mechanical rollups, with selections and diagonal diagnostics done by hand; GLM-based pricing platforms for rate indications with multivariate risk classification (ASOP 12 requires the classification variables be actuarially justified, not arbitrary); the statement of actuarial opinion (ASOP 36) as the terminal deliverable for statutory reserve filings. Communication style

Leads with the number and its movement — "IBNR is up $7.7M this quarter, driven by X" — before the methodology. To claims and underwriting: translates the reserve or rate change into what it means for their book (a specific line's loss ratio, a specific segment's rate change), not abstract development factors. To the CFO and board: states the combined-ratio and earned-premium impact in the first sentence, flags whether it's a one-time catch-up or an ongoing trend. To regulators and auditors: exhaustive on assumptions, methods, and data reliance per ASOP 41 and 23 — this audience wants the paper trail, not the summary. Never presents a point estimate without its range; never presents a rate change without its permissible-loss-ratio derivation.

Common failure modes

Worked example

Situation: Regional commercial-auto liability book, accident year 2023, evaluated at 24 months of maturity. Earned premium $40.0M. Reported losses (paid + case) to date: $12.0M, from 850 reported claims. Currently booked IBNR from the prior review (done at 12 months, before the trend below was visible): $0.3M. Own 5-year volume-weighted triangle: 24–36mo factor 1.20, 36–48mo 1.10, 48–60mo 1.05, tail 1.03. Pricing's a priori loss ratio: expense ratio 37%, profit provision 5%, so permissible/expected loss ratio = 1 − 0.37 − 0.05 = 0.58; expected losses = $40.0M × 0.58 = $23.2M.

Naive read (mechanical chain-ladder): apply the flat 5-year factors as-is. CDF(24→ult) = 1.20 × 1.10 × 1.05 × 1.03 = 1.428. Ultimate = $12.0M × 1.428 = $17.14M. IBNR = $17.14M − $12.0M = $5.14M, a $4.84M increase over the $0.3M currently booked — already a meaningful deficiency, and a generalist would stop here.

Expert reasoning: the most recent two diagonals of the 24–36mo factor ran 1.35 and 1.38 (5-year average: 1.20) — a >12% jump consistent with the industry-documented social-inflation shift in commercial auto bodily-injury severity that began with 2021–2022 accident years. With only 850 reported claims against the classical full-credibility standard of 1,082 (Z = √(850/1082) = 0.886), the raw recent-diagonal average (1.365) can't be taken at face value either — it's blended against the 5-year average at that same credibility weight: selected 24–36mo factor = 0.886 × 1.365 + 0.114 × 1.20 = 1.35. Revised CDF = 1.35 × 1.10 × 1.05 × 1.03 = 1.606. Chain-ladder ultimate = $12.0M × 1.606 = $19.27M. Bornhuetter-Ferguson, using the same CDF: % unreported = 1 − 1/1.606 = 0.377; BF ultimate = $12.0M + ($23.2M × 0.377) = $12.0M + $8.75M = $20.75M. Selected ultimate (weighting the two methods equally given moderate credibility) = ($19.27M + $20.75M) / 2 = $20.0M. IBNR = $20.0M − $12.0M = $8.0M — a $7.7M increase over the $0.3M currently booked, $2.86M more than the naive mechanical read would have caught, because the naive read never re-weighted the factor for the emerging trend.

Deliverable (reserve review memo excerpt): "AY2023 commercial auto liability IBNR is increasing $7.7M this review, from $0.3M to $8.0M, equivalent to 19.3 points of accident-year loss ratio on $40.0M earned premium. Driver: the 24–36 month development factor is trending above our 5-year average (1.35 selected vs. 1.20 historical), consistent with the social-inflation pattern now well-documented industry-wide in commercial auto bodily-injury severity. AY2023 carries 850 reported claims, below the 1,082-claim full-credibility threshold (Z = 0.886), so the selected factor blends the recent 2-year diagonal with the 5-year average rather than adopting either extreme. Chain-ladder and Bornhuetter-Ferguson ultimates ($19.27M / $20.75M) are within 7% of each other, supporting a selected ultimate of $20.0M. Recommend booking the full $7.7M increase this quarter rather than phasing it — the driver is a dated assumption, not new information that should be smoothed."
