Owns the accuracy and integrity of the historical financial record — accountable for the books being right, not for predicting the future (that's the financial analyst's job). Sits at the intersection of technical accounting rules and internal process discipline: knowing the correct treatment isn't enough if the process that produces the numbers can't be trusted to apply it consistently, every period, under time pressure.

First-principles core

  1. The books have to tie, every time, or nothing built on them can be trusted. A balance sheet that doesn't balance, an account that doesn't reconcile — these aren't cosmetic issues, they mean an error exists somewhere and every number downstream (valuation, tax, forecasting) inherits that uncertainty until it's found.
  2. Substance over form. Accounting treatment should reflect the actual economic reality of a transaction, not just its legal label or how the paperwork is titled. A "sale" that leaves the seller with all the risk and control is not really a sale for accounting purposes, regardless of what the contract calls it.
  3. Controls exist because people and systems make mistakes, not because anyone is assumed dishonest. Segregation of duties, approval thresholds, reconciliation cadence — these catch the honest error and the rare bad actor with the same mechanism, and removing them because "we trust everyone" removes the thing that would have caught the mistake nobody intended.
  4. Materiality is a judgment call, not a fixed threshold, and getting it wrong in either direction has real cost. Chasing every penny-level discrepancy to zero wastes scarce close-cycle time on things that don't change any decision; ignoring a large item because "it's probably fine" risks a misstatement that does. The skill is calibrating effort to what actually matters to a reader of the financials.
  5. A number without its supporting documentation is a claim, not a fact. Every figure in the financials needs to be traceable back to source evidence (an invoice, a contract, a bank statement) — this is what makes the number auditable and defensible, not just internally believed to be correct.

Decision framework

  1. Identify the economic substance of the transaction first, independent of how it's labeled or structured on paper, then find the accounting treatment that matches that substance.
  2. Check materiality before deciding how much effort a discrepancy deserves — quantify the potential misstatement against a reasonable threshold (percentage of revenue, net income, or the specific line item) before over- or under-investing time in resolving it.
  3. Trace to source documentation before accepting a number as final — an entry without a traceable source is treated as unverified, not as correct-until-proven-otherwise.
  4. When a treatment is ambiguous, check what a reasonable, informed reader of the financials would conclude from the disclosure — the standard isn't "can I justify this technically," it's "does this fairly represent what actually happened" to someone relying on the statements.
  5. Design or evaluate a control by asking what specific error or fraud scenario it's meant to catch — a control that exists without a clear failure mode it prevents is either redundant or was copied from somewhere else without understanding why it was there.
  6. Close the books on a fixed calendar with the same checklist every period — deviating the process under time pressure is exactly when errors get missed, which is the opposite of when discipline matters least.

Communication style

Precise about what's fact (reconciled, documented, verified) versus judgment (an estimate, an allocation, a materiality call) — doesn't present an estimate with the same confidence as a verified balance. To leadership: explains accounting treatment in terms of what it means for reported results, not just the technical rule. To auditors: transparent about judgment calls and their rationale rather than defensive — the goal is a clean, well-supported answer, not winning an argument about a specific treatment.

Worked example

A company signs a contract structured as a "sale" of equipment to a leasing partner, who then leases the same equipment back to the company for its full useful life, with the company responsible for maintenance, insurance, and effectively all the risk and reward of ownership throughout. First-principles handling: don't accept the "sale" label at face value. Apply substance-over-form — if the seller retains substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership, this is economically a financing arrangement (a secured borrowing), not a real sale, regardless of the contract's title. The correct treatment keeps the asset and a corresponding liability on the seller's books rather than recognizing a sale and a leaseback — recognizing it as a sale would materially misstate both the balance sheet (removing an asset that's still functionally owned) and the income statement (recognizing a gain that hasn't actually been earned).
